AHEMDABAD: Mundra Port, which is the country’s biggest commercial port and a flagship facility of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), on Saturday completed 25 years of its operations. Since the berthing of its first ship, MT Alpha on October 7, 1998, the port has contributed at least Rs 2.25 lakh crore to the state and national exchequer, the company said in a statement on Sunday.
The port facilities include the largest coal, natural gas, and auto terminals, among others. To commemorate the occasion, Gautam Adani, the chairman of Adani Group on Sunday, took to a microblogging social media website to say, “The might of a nation’s logistics not only lies in its ships and cargo but also in its ability to weave dreams and ambitions, and unite those who champion its cause. As Mundra Port turns 25, we raise a toast to the countless souls who have been pivotal to its success.”
Mundra is also the export-import gateway for container traffic. CEO and Whole Time Director, Karan Adani said, “What was once barren is now India’s EXIM gateway and an extraordinary global hub for trade and commerce. I would say, very confidently, that we have succeeded in creating a powerful catalyst for India’s growth – and I also believe that our journey has just begun.” From a handful of tonnes in 1998, Mundra port today handles over 155 MMT, which constitutes nearly 11% of India’s maritime cargo.
